Maggie Rae Young, 6, of Stagger Weed Road, Bakersville, went home to be with the Lord April 6, 2019. She was a student in kindergarten at Gouge Elementary School. Maggie loved the outdoors and her animals – especially her goats and honeybees – and also enjoyed Volkswagen cars.

Norene Duncan McKinney, 85, of Estelle Lane, Spruce Pine, died Wednesday, April 3, 2019, at Blue Ridge Regional Hospital in Spruce Pine.

William Leland “Bill” Hayes, 81, of Chestnut Grove Road, died Tuesday, April 2, 2019, at the St. Joseph’s campus of Mission Hospitals in Asheville following a yearlong battle with cancer.

Mr. Morris Boyd “Buddy” Adcock, 78, of Sharpsburg, Georgia, passed away Monday, April 1, 2019. He is preceded in death by his parents, James and Kathryn Adcock; brothers, Billy Adcock and Harry Adcock; and sister, Mary Ellen Crockett. 

Tate Whittington, 89, of Elizabethton, Tennessee, died Saturday, March 30, 2019, at his residence. A native of Avery County, he was a son of the late Tom Miller and Stella Whittington. He served as a Deputy at the Avery County Sheriff’s Department and a Chief Deputy at the Mitchell County Sheriff’s Department. Funeral services were 2 p.m.

Randy Douglas Putman, 57, of Jones Garland Road, Bakersville, passed away March 23, 2019, at Blue Ridge Regional Hospital. He was a native of Mitchell County and a self-employed farmer. He attended Beans Creek Church of Jesus Christ. Randy enjoyed being in the mountains, and the outdoors and especially liked trading and selling cars.

Janice Carroll Moffitt McKinney, 70, of Bakersville, the Buladean Community, passed away Sunday, March 10, 2019, in the Memorial Mission Hospital in Asheville.

Robert H. “Bob” Lominac, 84, of Clearwater Lane, Spruce Pine, went home to be with the Lord Wednesday, March 27, 2019, at the Blue Ridge Regional Hospital.

Born Aug. 16, 1934, in Keystone, West Virginia, he was the son of the late Harmon and Mary Martha Hall Lominac. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by a son, Dennis Lominac; and a stepson, Darrel Renfro.

Maxine M. Keaton, 85, of Finksburg, Maryland, passed away Friday, March 22, 2019, at home with her loving family around her.  Born March 15, 1934, in Bakersville, she was the daughter of the late James “Earl” McKinney Sr. and Nanie Buchanan McKinney.

Katherine Ann Hughes, 73, of Lynn Drive, Spruce Pine, went home to be with the Lord Saturday, March 23, 2019. She was a native of Mitchell County. She was a member of First Freewill Baptist Church Spruce Pine since it was founded. Katherine loved going to church and hearing the word of God. She loved her family and her church family.

Harold Nicholas “Nick” Houchard, 80, of Burnsville, passed away Thursday, March 21, 2019, at his home. Born Sept. 9, 1938, in Long Beach, California, he was a son of the late Harold and Michella Mehle Houchard. 

Lois Young Gunter, 94, of Spruce Pine, died Saturday, March 30, 2019, at Brian Center Health and Rehab in Spruce Pine.

Charles Smith

Charles (Chuck) Edward Smith, 91, of Boone, passed away peacefully Monday, March 18, 2019, while at home with his family by his side. Chuck was born April 17, 1927, to the late Charles T. and Marie F. Smith and was preceded in death by his beautiful wife, Natalie. Chuck was a Veteran of the United States Navy and was a retired electrical engineer. 

Laura Kay Biddix Simerly, 71, of Dennis Cove Road, Hampton, Tennessee, died Saturday, March 16, 2019, at the Johnson City Medical Center.

Born Jan. 22, 1948, in McDowell County, she was the daughter of the late Aaron “Bud” Biddix and Ruby McGuire Biddix. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by a brother, Aaron “Sunny” Biddix Jr.

Doug Beasley, 87, of Duke Franklin Road, Spruce Pine, died Tuesday, March 19, 2019, at the Charles George V.A. Medical Center in Asheville.

Born May 21, 1931, in Montgomery County, Alabama, he was the son of the late David and Zeina Beasley. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister and three brothers.
