Bobby Samuel Byrd

Bobby Samuel Byrd, 78, son of the late Samuel and Ora Belle Davis Byrd, went home to be with his Lord Tuesday, May 23, 2017. He was a member of Liberty Hill Baptist Church where he taught Sunday School, served as a Deacon and loved his church family. Bobby enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending time with his family.

Robert “Bob” Broadwater Sr., 56, of Broadwater Way, Spruce Pine, died Wednesday, May 10, 2017, at his home.

Born Jan. 28, 1961, in St. Louis, Missouri, he was the son of the late Robert Guy and Alice Hulette Broadwater. He was also proceeded in death by his grandmother, Wanda H. Gould.


Henry Sanford Hughes


Henry Sanford Hughes, of the Ingalls community, went home to be with Jesus May 10, 2017, at Cannon Memorial Hospital. He was 71 years young.

Lillian Grindstaff Dees

Lillian Grindstaff Dees, 96, died Thursday, April 20, 2017, at the Brian Center Health and Rehab in Spruce Pine.

Born July 1, 1920, in Mitchell County, Lillian was the daughter of the late Jesse and Melissa Grindstaff. She was also preceded in death by her sister, Orla Burleson; and brothers Lodi, Joe and Bill Grindstaff.

David H. Hall, 91, of Halltown Road, Spruce Pine, died Thursday, April 27, 2017, at the John F. Keever Solace Center in Asheville.


Theresa Beauvais

Theresa Beauvais, 83, recently passed away in Newton after a brave battle with ALS. Her life will be celebrated Mass of Christian Burial at noon Friday, May 5, 2017, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Newton with Father Jim Collins officiating. 

The family will receive friends following the service at the church. 

It was Terry’s wish that, in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made to the Monastery of the Precious Blood, 700 Bridge St., Manchester, NH, 03104. 


Thomas Warren Buchanan Sr.

Thomas Warren Buchanan Sr., 82, of Burnsville, passed away peacefully at his home Sunday, April 9, 2017. Warren was born July 26, 1934, in Bakersville, the son of the late Zeb and Bertie Wilson Buchanan. He was also preceded in death by siblings  Grace Ellis, Nell Young and Christine Young.


Clay Bennett

Clay Bennett, 81, of Bakersville, passed away Friday, April 7, 2017, at his home. He was the son of the late Sam and Nettie Edwards Bennett. Clay was a member of Cub Creek Baptist Church, which he loved to attend. His favorite sports were fishing and deer hunting. 

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Evelyn Ray; and brothers, Bill, Junior, Glenn, Ray, James and Jack Bennett.

TAMARAC, FLORIDA -- James D. “Deward” Buchanan, 88, of Tamarac, Florida, died Wednesday, Feb. 15, 2017.

Mr. Buchanan was born March 25, 1928, to the late Pat and Bertha Buchanan in the Hawk Community of Mitchell County. His wife of 66 years, Claire Buchanan, survives him.

Mr. Buchanan served in the United States Navy where he developed a love for electronics, which led to a long career with IBM.

GREEN MOUNTAIN -- Gail Griffith, 76, of the Tipton Hill community in Green Mountain, passed away Friday, March 10, 2017, at the Brian Center Health and Rehab in Spruce Pine.

Born Dec. 14, 1940, in Mitchell County, she was the daughter of the late Fred and Frances Profitt Bryant. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one sister; Brenda Blanton and three brothers; Kenneth, Bill and Jim Bryant.

BANDANA -- Solena Mozell Howell, 90, of NC 80, the Bandana community in Bakersville, went home to be with the Lord Friday, March 10, 2017. A funeral service was Tuesday, March 14, 2017, in the Chapel of Webb Funeral Home. Interment followed in Silver Chapel Baptist Church Cemetery. Words of comfort may be emailed to the family by going to, selecting Mozell Howell’s name and signing her guestbook. Webb Funeral Home in Spruce Pine is assisting the Howell family. Mrs. Howell’s obituary has also been posted on Facebook.

GAFFNEY, SOUTH CAROLINA -- William Stephen Bratton, 68, of 172 Stroupe Estate Road, went home to be with the Lord Saturday, March 11, 2017, at his residence.

Born in Gaffney, he was the husband of Susan Lee Bratton and son of the late Rev. Troy A. Bratton and Osteen Humphries Bratton. He was a graduate of Boiling Springs High School, Isothermal Community College and retired from Alcoa. He was an avid Gaffney Indian fan and South Carolina Gamecock fan, member of the Sons of the Confederate Veterans and loved his family dearly, especially his grandsons.
