Ronnie Sherrill Pittman, 75, of Milhaven Lane, Charlotte, passed away Sunday, July 7, 2019. He was a son of the late Clarence and Pauline Buchanan Pittman and a native of Mitchell County.

Albert Wayne Hoilman, 71, of Sweet Creek Road, Bakersville, went home to be with the Lord July 10, 2019. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ralph and Dorothy Phillips Hoilman; sisters, Doris Hoilman, Debra Weiford and Betty Wilcox; brothers-in-law, Lonnie Wilcox, Clyde Wilcox and Ed Wayson; and one great-granddaughter, Isabella Grace.

Billy Dean Frye

Billy Dean Frye, 71, of Pitman Road, Bakersville, went home to be with the Lord Friday, July 12, 2019. He was a native of Mitchell County and a son of the late Jay and Lula Greene Frye. He was retired as the produce manager for Food Lion Grocery in Spruce Pine and attended Cloudland Baptist Church.

Iva Lee Street, 87, died Monday, July 1, 2019, surrounded by her loving family. A native of Mitchell County, Iva Lee was a daughter of the late Joe and Lillie Belle Hughes Street. Funeral services were 1 p.m. Friday, July 5, at Odom’s Chapel Freewill Baptist Church. Graveside services followed the funeral in the Melton Cemetery on Hughes Gap Road. Memorial donations may be made to Hospice and Palliative Care of the Blue Ridge, at 236 Hospital Drive, Spruce Pine, NC 28777.

Joe Biddix, 87, of Altapass Highway, Spruce Pine, died peacefully July 2, 2019, at his home surrounded by his family.

Carlos Lee Yelton, 92, of Ridgecrest Lane, Spruce Pine, passed away Thursday, June 27, 2019. He was a native of Mitchell County and a son of the late Luther and Lucy Green Yelton. He was a retired maintenance mechanic with Allied Chemical in Baltimore, Maryland. He was a United States Navy Veteran serving at Pearl Harbor. 

E.J. Atkins

E.J. Atkins, 79, of the Rabbit Hop Community, went home to be with the Lord Sunday, June 23, 2019, at St. Joseph’s Hospital. A native of Estatoe he was a son of the late Von and Rexie Miller Atkins. He was also preceded in death by brothers, C.W. “Dub” and Larry Atkins; brother-in-law, Harley Murphy; and sister-in-law, Edna Atkins. E.J. was of the Pentecostal Faith and attended Estatoe Church of God. He loved raccoon hunting and trout fishing.

Marie Sparks

Marie Greene Sparks, 98, of the Estatoe Community, went home to be with the Lord Tuesday, June 18, 2019, at Johnson City Medical Center. A native of Jackson County, she was a daughter of the late Annie Greene and wife of the late Ralph Sparks Sr., who passed away in 1985. 

Shirley Peek

Shirley Ann Dayton Peek, 82, of Morganton, originally from Spruce Pine, died peacefully Sunday, June 16, 2019, at the residence of her daughter. Born May 24, 1937, in Spruce Pine, she was the daughter of the late McCoy and Elizabeth Stamey. She was a homemaker and loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She loved her family very much, and her greatest enjoyment was spending time with them.

William Omar “W.O.” Butler, 92, passed away Friday, June 14, 2019. W.O. was the beloved husband of Anna Rudkin Butler and devoted son of the late Allen and Ida Butler. 

Janet Bernice Berry

Janet Bernice Berry, 86, of Spruce Pine, went home to be with the Lord Sunday, June 23, 2019, at the Charles George VA Hospital with her son and daughter by her side.

James “Jim” Monroe Webb, 74, of the Harrell Hill Community, entered into eternal rest on Tuesday, June 11, 2019, at Mission Hospital.  A native of Mitchell County, he was a son of the late Willie Webb and Alice Gortney Webb Tipton. Jim worked for Modern Globe for 32 years and then 15 years at BRP until his retirement. He was a member of Green Mountain Presbyterian Church, where he was an Elder.

Born on Flag Day, June 14, 1954, met her maker Oct 24, 2015. She was a resident of Spruce Pine. She lived most of her life in Red Springs, which made her a small girl all her life. She left her cherished memories to her husband, Kenneth Johnson; sisters, Kathy Klan, Jackie Stark and Emma Kennerty; her brother, John Herman Kennerty; and an extended family of many friends who loved her deeply. She loved life, animals and family; she is missed all, but she still lives in all our hearts.

Miriam Brown

Miriam Brown, 74, of Linville Falls, passed away Saturday, June 15, 2019, at the  Brian Center Health & Rehabilitation in Spruce Pine.

She was born June 24, 1944, in McDowell County, a daughter of James Uriah Horne and Miriam Franklin Horne.
