Jimmie M. Smith, 88, of Woods Road, Spruce Pine, went home to be with the Lord Saturday, Nov. 10, 2018. He was a native of Avery County and the son of the late William E. and Myrtle Garland Smith. He was a Veteran of The United States Air Force and a member of Spruce Pine United Methodist Church. Jim served in The Strategic Air Command throughout the Korean War. He was honorably discharged as a Staff Sergeant.

M. Douglas Rowell, a longtime resident of Little Switzerland, passed away at his home Sunday, Oct. 28, 2018, after a short illness, surrounded by family and friends. The family had public services at The Church of the Resurrection at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 30. 

Jackie George Hoilman, 79, of McKinney Cove Road, Bakersville, went home to be with the Lord Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2018. He was a native of Mitchell County and a son of the late Milton and Polly Yelton Hoilman. He was retired as a self-employed roofer and farmer.

Carolyn Proffitt Eller passed away Tuesday, Nov. 6, 2018, at Beacon Place Hospice and Palliative Care of Greensboro. She was born Oct. 8, 1938, in Baskerville. Carolyn was predeceased by her husband, Keith P. Eller; and her parents, Edward and Winnie Proffitt, of Baskerville. Carolyn is survived by her son, Gregory Eller, of Durham; her daughter, Kathryn Eller Kovach, of Greensboro; and her grandson, Benjamin Kovach, of New York, New York.

James Hugh Stewart, 90, of South Toe River, Burnsville, died Thursday, Nov. 1, 2018, at his home.

Bruce Howard Sparks was born June 8, 1925, in Bakersville, to Reuben Stokes Sparks and Louise Gouge Sparks. He was their last surviving child. He was a retired United States Navy Master Chief who served his country for 26 years during World War II, Korea and Vietnam. He spent two years of active duty aboard the USS Boise CL-47 in the Pacific. The Boise was a light cruiser that sank several enemy ships, shot down enemy aircraft and bombarded enemy positions to protect U.S. troops.

Jean Whitson, 84, of Marion, passed away at her home on the morning of Saturday, Oct. 20, 2018, while surrounded by loved ones. The daughter of the late Brack and Maydath Stamey Buchanan, she was born Sept. 21, 1934, in Bakersville.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Brown Whitson; and one brother, Billy Buchanan.

Jerry Lee Riddle, 75, died Saturday, Oct. 6, 2018, at Atrium Health-Cleveland. Born Oct. 1, 1943, in Mitchell County, he was the son of the late Nimpson Riddle and Betty Jane Holifield Riddle.

Seth Daniel McKinney, 15, of Valley Road, Spruce Pine, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 16, 2018, at Niswonger Children’s Hospital in Johnson City, Tennessee.

Natasha Lynn Campbell Hullett, 30, of Dale Road, Spruce Pine, died Sunday, Oct. 14, 2018, at Blue Ridge Regional Hospital in Spruce Pine.

Nancy “Sue” Wilson Hobson, 79, of Hwy 261, Bakersville, went home to be with the Lord Oct. 20, 2018. She was a native of Mitchell County and a daughter of the late Dayton and Anna Lee Cain. She was a member and Sunday School teacher at Cloudland Baptist Church. She retired from Mitchell County Agricultural Extension Office, where she was a nutritionist. She loved her flowers, spending time with her family and her church family. 

Doris Greene Hobson, 85, of Gouge Cove Road, Bakersville, went home to be with the Lord Oct. 14, 2018. She was a native of Mitchell County and a daughter of the late Marvin and Inez Phillips Greene. She was a homemaker and a member of Fork Mountain Baptist Church.

Hal Ellis Sparks, 74, died unexpectedly at his home in Loganville, Georgia, Sept.16, 2018. He was born at home in the Ledger community on May 22, 1944, to Hankins and Myrtle Ellis Sparks, who preceded him in death.

Mildred Alvina Huff, 87, of Little Switzerland, passed away Saturday, Oct. 6, 2018, at Mission Hospital in Asheville. A native of Lima, Ohio, she was the daughter of the late John and Mildred Davis White. After living in Florida, Mildred and her husband moved to Little Switzerland.

Harold Bridgebane “H.B.” Copley, of Penland, passed away peacefully at his home Oct. 8, 2018. He was born in 1931 to Flossie Willis and Sherman Copley. Although HB was born in Kentucky and graduated from the University of Kentucky, he lived most of his life in Penland. As a young man, he taught an enameling class at the Penland School of Crafts. He was in the Air Force during the Korean Conflict. He worked for many years in independent sales and as a real estate broker. After retiring, he worked at Walmart.
