Charles D. Hoffecker Jr.

Charles D. Hoffecker Jr., of Concord, passed away Dec. 20, 2017. He was born Nov. 17, 1926, in Norfolk, Virginia, and was the son of the late Charles D. Hoffecker and Mary Simmonds Hoffecker. He graduated from Porter Military Academy, Charleston, South Carolina, in 1944 and the Citadel in 1951 after serving in the Merchant Marine Academy and the U.S. Army.

Robert Vincent Tomaselli

SPRUCE PINE

Robert Vincent Tomaselli, of the Altapass Community, Spruce Pine, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 20, 2017, at Brian Center Health and Rehabilitation in Spruce Pine. He was 88 years of age.

Robert was born to Anthony and Bertha Tomaselli. Anthony had immigrated to the United States in 1917. He was proud of his rich Italian heritage.

William (Bill) John Cook Jr.

Feb. 14, 1932 – Dec. 20, 2017

William (Bill) John Cook Jr. passed away Wednesday, Dec. 20, at the age of 85. Bill was born Feb. 14, 1932, to the late William Cook Sr. and Edwidge Cook of Uxbridge, Massachusetts.

Randy Cole

Randy Cole, 60, of Galax Trail, Spruce Pine, gathered hands with his Savior Saturday, Dec. 9, 2017, at his home.

Born July 13, 1957, in Buncombe County, he was the son of the late Glen and Donnie Hensley Cole. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Harlon Cole.

Barbara Kate Conley

Barbara Kate Conley, 88, of Bakersville, passed away Thursday, Nov. 23, 2017, at her home surrounded by her family. She was the daughter of the late Angus and Blanche Robinson Masters.

In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Robert Conley; brothers, Harold Masters, Angus Masters Jr. and Gene Masters; sisters, Sarah Huffman and Maudeline Masters; a special son-in-law, Brian Peterson; and grandson, Brandon Peterson.

BAKERSVILLE

Parnell Buchanan

Parnell Buchanan, 87, of Stagger Weed Road, Bakersville, went home to be with the Lord Nov. 12, 2017. He was a native of Mitchell County and a son of the late John and Ada Snyder Buchanan.

He was a Korean War Veteran and a member of Calvary Baptist Church. He was retired from Timken Steel, where he was in supervision. Parnell enjoyed spending time outdoors and he was an antique collector.

Buladean

D.C. Bennett

D.C. Bennett, 88, of Buladean, went home to be with the Lord Tuesday, Nov. 7, 2017, at his home. A native of Mitchell County, he was a son of the late Dove and Beuna Vista Street Bennett. He was also preceded in death by brothers, J.B. and Ralph Bennett.

Virginia Ferguson Schoverling

Virginia Ferguson Schoverling, 90, of Galax Trail, Spruce Pine, went home to be with the Lord Monday, Oct. 23, 2017. She was a native of Mitchell County and the daughter of the late Robert and Milia Sparks Burleson.

She was a member of Bear Creek Baptist Church where she held many positions over the years. She was also active in county Baptist programs and in First Baptist Church in North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, while she lived there. Virginia loved her Lord, her church and her family.

Marie White Bost

Marie White Bost, 73, of the Green Valley Community in Avery County, went to be with the Lord Oct. 23, 2017.

Born Nov. 1, 1943, in Mitchell County, she was the daughter of the late Lee and Melba Houston White. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Richard M. (Hoss) Ollis; her husband, Ronald L. Bost; and infant sister, Carolyn White.

Cynthia Ann ‘Cindy’ Sparks Osborne

July 25, 1958 — Oct. 9, 2017

Cynthia “Cindy” Sparks Osborne left us peacefully to become our Angel in heaven the morning of Oct. 9, 2017, surrounded by the family and many friends who loved her so. Cindy was born July 25, 1958, to Charlene and Deward Sparks, of Bakersville, but grew up in Coconut Creek, Florida, attending Coconut Creek High School, where she made many lasting friends.

Lona Buchanan Boston, 84, of the Estatoe Community, went home to be with the Lord Saturday, Sept. 30, 2017, at her home. A native of Mitchell County, she was a daughter of the late Spurgeon and Estie Buchanan, and the wife of the late Joe Boston, who passed away Sept. 18, 2017.

She was also preceded by siblings, Maxie Burgin, Evelyn Hensley, Lorene Harris, Dorothy Buchanan, Sherrill Buchanan and John Tipton.

Fred Bremer

Fred Bremer, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and truck driver – died Friday, Sept. 8, 2017, in Bakersville, from Glioblastoma brain cancer. He was 65 years old.

Guy Gene Biddix

Sept. 27, 1937 – Sept. 15, 2017

 

Mr. Guy Gene Biddix, 79, a former resident of Pheasant Drive, Washington, North Carolina, died Friday, Sept. 15, 2017, at Vidant Medical Center in Greenville.

Funeral services were 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 23, 2017, at the Chapel of Paul Funeral Home & Crematory in Washington. Burial followed in Oakdale Cemetery.

Geneva Young Boone

On Sunday morning, Sept. 10, 2017, Geneva Young Boone, 86, arrived at Heaven’s Gate to be greeted by brother Warren Young, and sisters Wilma Boone, Shelba Jean Grindstaff, Floy Gage and Allie Buchanan; and her parents, James and Daisy Hall Young. Jesus enfolded her in His arms of welcome and a joyous reunion began. Geneva was a member of Lily Branch Baptist Church and retired from Baxter Healthcare.

Ben Bonner

Ben Bonner, 17, of Thomas Road, Spruce Pine, died Tuesday, Sept. 5, 2017, at the Memorial Campus of Mission Hospitals in Asheville.

Born July 11, 2000, in Catawba County, he was the son of Randy and Michelle Bonner. He was a member of the Western Carolina Church in Spruce Pine and a senior at Mitchell High School.
