Betty Buchanan

Betty Ann Buchanan, formerly of Spruce Pine, passed away Tuesday, Aug. 27, 2019, of natural causes in Martinsville, Virginia.

She is preceded in death by her parents Arthur David Buchanan and Nora Hicks Buchanan.

Jean Lathrop Weatherman, 89, of Conrad Lane, Spruce Pine, died Monday, Sept. 3, 2019, at her home.

Born Apr. 22, 1930, in Buncombe County, she was the daughter of the late Russell Louis Lathrop and Norma McLean Dillingham.  

Ariel Hedrick

Ariel Clairese Hedrick, 33, went home to be with the Lord Thursday, Aug. 29, 2019, at Burke Hospice and Palliative Care.  A native of Mitchell County, she was preceded in death by her father, Kenny Hedrick; paternal grandparents, Glenn and Betty Hedrick; and maternal grandparents, Bobby and Mary Craig Lowery.  

Betty Jean Harrell

Betty Jean Mosley Harrell, 84, of Bakersville, went home to be with the Lord Monday, Sept. 2, 2019, at her home. A native of Mitchell County, she was a daughter of the late Ben and Dolly Green Mosley. 

She was also preceded in death by her husband, Harlan Harrell; two grandchildren, Douglas Johnson and Junior Harrell; and brothers, J.G. Mosley, Walter Mosley and Ben Mosley Jr. 

Faye Helen Buchanan, 92, of Bakersville, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 3, 2019, at Mission Hospital in Asheville. She was the daughter of the late Troy and Elizabeth Buchanan Hoilman and the wife of the late Jack M. Buchanan. 

Faye was a member of Bakersville Baptist Church, and she will always be remembered as a loving mother and grandmother. 

Alonzo Bryant

Alonzo Bryant, 85, of Erwin, Tennessee, passed away Monday, Sept. 2, 2019, at Johnson City Medical Center. He was a son of the late James and Naomi Howell Bryant. Alonzo was a native of Poplar, but lived in Pennsylvania for 40 years before returning to Mitchell County in 1988 and then to Erwin in October 2010.

Bessie Silvers Smith, 88, of the Estatoe Community, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, Aug. 28, 2019, at her home surrounded by her loving family.

Robert “Bobby” Lee Jenkins Jr., 71, of the Buladean Community, Bakersville, passed away Sunday, Aug. 18, 2019, at his home. He was the son of the late Robert Lee and Martha Honeycutt Jenkins. 

Ann Janelle Ward, 85, of Newland, passed away Saturday, Aug. 17, 2019, at Blue Ridge Regional Hospital. 

She was the daughter of the late Milton and Hazel Greene Hughes. Ann was a member of the Henson Creek Baptist Church and was an avid reader, enjoyed working word puzzles and was a fabulous cook. 

J.C. Gage

John Carver “J.C.” Gage, 81, of Gray, Tennessee, passed away Friday, Aug. 16, 2019, at Johnson City Medical Center.

Carl Dwiggins

Carl Edward Dwiggins, 78, of Conover, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 14, 2019, at the Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem following a period of declining health. Born April 11, 1941, in Forsyth County, he was the son of the late Lattie Ralph Dwiggins Sr. and Adelia Aline Everhardt Dwiggins.

William "Scott" Burleson.

William “Scott” Burleson, 61, passed away suddenly Tuesday, Aug. 13, 2019. Scott was born July 29, 1958, in Mitchell County, to Lloyd and Martha Louise Smith Burleson. 

Forrest Biddix, 89, of Maple Road, in the Altapass community of Spruce Pine, died Wednesday, July 31, 2019, at Blue Ridge Regional Hospital in Spruce Pine. Born June 23, 1930, in Mitchell County, he was the son of the late Stacy and Ruth Hogan Biddix. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his wife, Lola Wise Biddix, who passed away in 2012. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Lucy Biddix Hall; and a brother, E.J. Biddix. 

Iva Street

Iva Lee Street, 87, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, July 1, 2019, surrounded by her loving family.  A native of Mitchell County, Iva Lee was a daughter of the late Joe and Lillie Belle Hughes Street. 

Millicent “Millie” Hedges Carpenter Jackson, 89, of Little Buck Hill Road, died Monday, July 15, 2019, at Blue Ridge Regional Hospital in Spruce Pine. Born May 17, in Kieffer, West Virginia, she was the daughter of the late Lacy Circle Hedges and Edith Frances Dietz Hedges.
