Mitchell golf team dominates in WHC tournament

McGuire named MVP, Warren honored as Coach of the Year

TRYON – The Mitchell High School golf team dominated in the Western Highlands Conference Tournament and will move on to play in the regionals Monday, April 30, and Tuesday, May 1, at Linville.

As a team, Mitchell shot a 348 and 345 over the two-day tournament for a total of 693, 27 strokes better than second-place Polk.

Mitchell junior Austin McGuire shot a 166 and was named tournament MVP. Freshman Ty Pitman shot a 169 and sophomore Mitchell McMahan shot 171.

Both Pitman and McMahan earned All-Conference honors.

Head coach Mitchell Warren was named Western Highlands Conference Coach of the Year.

Sophomores Ty Sparks (192) and Hudson Renfro (199) and freshman Tucker Garland (200) rounded out the individual scores for Mitchell.

“Austin is a junior, Mitchell McMahan and Hudson Renfro sophomores and Ty Pitman, Ty Sparks and Tucker Garland are freshmen,” Warren said. “So, we should still be pretty good next year especially if they work on their game.”
