Historical Society announces its 2nd annual History Bee
The 2nd annual Mitchell County Historical Society History Bee is scheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday, March 22, at the Historic Courthouse in Bakersville.
The goal of the History Bee and the mission of MCHS is helping Mitchell County residents, especially young people, become more aware of the area’s heritage.
There will be two divisions of competition, one for middle school and one for high school students. First prize in each division is $500; second prize $300; and third prize $200. Local businesses and organizations provide the prizes.
All History Bee questions come from Elizabeth Hunter’s book “Voices of the Valley,” which was published in 2011, the 150th anniversary of the formation of Mitchell County. This publication is in public and school libraries and MCHS has made copies available to history teachers. It is also available for purchase from the Historical Society office in Bakersville and from other sources.
Students are asked to sign up for the MCHS History Bee by Friday, March 16. Registration is free. Students interested in participating may ask their history teacher for a registration form or find it at mitchellnchistory.org.
