Middle school blanks Cane River, 28-0
The Mitchell Middle School Mountaineers improved to 4-1 Tuesday, Sept. 19, with a 28-0 win over Toe River Conference foe Cane River.
Mitchell scored in the first 1:07 of the game on a 32-yard touchdown run by quarterback Carter Hoyle. Running back Andrew Robinson added the two-point conversion run.
Mitchell’s defense held Cane River to two first downs in the first half, and two Mountaineer first-half turnovers deep in Cane River territory thwarted a pair scoring opportunities for Mitchell.
In the second half, Andrew Robinson scored on a 1-yard touchdown run on Mitchell’s first possession run to give the Mountaineers a 14-0 lead. After forcing a Cane River punt, Mitchell scored on its next possession on a 1-yard TD run by Hoyle. Hoyle completed the two-point conversion pass to Dalton McMahan to give Mitchell a 22-0 lead.
After forcing another punt, Pierce Greene finished off the scoring with a 4-yard touchdown run to increase Mitchell’s lead to 28-0.
Hoyle finished the game with 142 yards rushing on nine attempts and was 5-of-7 passing for 74 yards. Robinson added 113 yards on nine carries for Mitchell and Ty Turbyfill grabbed a pair of catches for 38 yards.
Gage Young led the Mitchell defense with eight tackles, followed by Gabe Brandt and Xander Gardner, who each had six.
Mitchell Middle hosted Hampton this past Tuesday during the final home game of the season. Results of that game were not available at press time. The Mountaineers travel to play East McDowell at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 3, and finish regular-season play at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 10, at Avery.
