Walker receives volunteer award
Mitchell County resident Dr. Marvin Walker is the recipient of the 2018 Governor’s Volunteer Service Award.
Walker gives many hours to volunteer service projects such as Coordinator for Mitchell/Yancey Rise Against Hunger, Habitat for Humanity, numerous International and local disaster relief assistance projects, Spruce Pine Rotary local support projects and more.
The recognition is part of the N.C. Governor’s Award for Volunteer Service program, which honors individuals, groups, teams and businesses that make significant contributions to their communities through volunteer service.
Since the program began in 1978, more than 16,000 individuals have been recognized for their service. County coordinators and local committees receive and evaluate the nominations.
Mitchell County’s local coordinator is Jeff Vance of Mitchell County Cooperative Extension. Walker was honored with the presentation by his fellow Rotarians at the Thursday, May 3, Spruce Pine Rotary Club meeting where “Service Above Self” is the Rotary motto.
Walker was nominated for the award by fellow Rotarian Alex Glover.
