Thayer returns to her roots
LEDGER – It would be difficult to find someone to teach theatre in Mitchell County with as much experience as Chelsea Wilson Thayer.
The Bakersville native and resident began working this school year as Mitchell County Schools’ K-2 theatre teacher after Katherine Girtman was hired to replace Matthew Sanders as band director. Sanders left Mitchell after three years to be the band director at R-S Central Middle School.
“Returning to teach in Mitchell County feels very ‘full circle’ for me,” Thayer said. “Though I’ve worked on stages from London to New York City and taught in many schools, it only seems appropriate I return to teaching theatre at Mitchell High – where I first fell in love with the art form.”
Thayer and her husband, Bryan, moved back to Mitchell County in 2014. She is a 2002 graduate of Mitchell High School who holds a bachelor’s degree in theatre education from Appalachian State University and a master’s degree in theatre education from New York University. She and Bryan have three sons and a daughter.
“I’m thrilled to be teaching theatre K-12 in Mitchell County schools,” Chelsea said. “By being at both Greenlee and Gouge, I get to see every K-2 student in the county and help them build a foundation and appreciation for theatre.”
