Power outage affects more than 4,000
SPRUCE PINE – A fallen tree caused more than 4,000 Duke Energy customers to lose power this past Thursday into Friday morning in Spruce Pine, Little Switzerland as well as parts of Avery and McDowell counties.
Power went out around 4:30 p.m. Thursday, April 5, after a tree fell on lines near the substation on Greenwood Road and subsequently took down three poles.
Power was restored to most customers by early Friday morning, while some were not back on the grid until around noon.
“It was so widespread because the substation is the central point of power in the area,” said Randy Wheeless, of Duke Energy Corporate Communications. “The hospital was without power, so we re-routed the restoration process to prioritize what needed to have power.”
Wheeless said there was no work going on in the area and he it is not known what made the tree fall.
Firefighters responded to the area after a transformer exploded causing a small fire.
