Out with the old, in with the new
BAKERSVILLE – Officers with the Mitchell County Sheriff’s Office recently received new pistols at no cost to the taxpayers.
All but three of the 21 new 9 mm pistols were free through a trade-in program with Cooper’s Trading in Burnsville. The new firearms replace the officers’ 10-year-old .40 caliber handguns.
“Ammunition is cheaper for a 9 mm, and their slides make them easier to handle,” said Jesse English, Mitchell County Sheriff’s deputy. “They are smaller and weigh less than our guns, too.”
Mitchell County Sheriff’s Office Lt. Det. Cecil Hobson began the effort to get new guns for the sheriff’s office, English said, and deputies had the option to purchase their old pistols through the trade-in program.
