Quilt Guild meets Tuesday, Jan. 8

The January meeting of the Mountain Piecemakers Quilt Guild features a nationally known quilter, Linda Cantrell, whose presentation will be a trunk show titled “I Did It My Way!” 

Her specialty is humorous pictorial appliqué. Her work is themed wall hangings. The meeting begins at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 8, at the Town Center in Burnsville with a covered dish lunch, followed by a business meeting and a drawing for Christmas blocks. 

 

Family’s home destroyed by fire

SPRUCE PINE – A crowdfunding effort is underway to assist a local family whose home was recently destroyed by fire. 

Rebekah and Nathan Thacker, and their daughters, Ruth and Rachel, came home Dec. 5 to discover their home had been destroyed by an apparent electrical fire. The family plans to tear down what remains of their old house and rebuild. 

A GoFundMe page set up to assist the family had raised $2,110 of the $5,000 goal as of press time. Visit www.gofundme.com and search “Rebekah Thacker” to donate.

 

Traffic stop leads to arrest

A traffic stop led to the arrest of a Robbinsville man who has been charged with drug and weapons offenses.

Phillip Wayne Jones, 34, of Jackson Branch Road, Robbinsville, was stopped by Mitchell County sheriff’s deputies in the early morning hours Thursday, Dec. 27, and charged with possession of drug paraphernalia, carrying a concealed weapon, simple possession of a schedule VI narcotic and possession of methamphetamine. 

Jones’ bond was set at $8,500 and he is scheduled to appear in court Jan. 16.

 

Sparks charged after riding ATV

A Spruce Pine man who was riding an ATV was arrested by Mitchell County sheriff’s deputies.

Daryl Lynn Sparks, 46, of White Rock Road, Spruce Pine, was stopped while riding a four-wheeler on Humpback Mountain Road. 

He was arrested and charged with possession of drug paraphernalia, driving while license revoked, operating an ATV on a street or highway and possession of methamphetamine.

He was released after posting a $7,500 bond. He is scheduled to appear in court Jan. 16.
