Performing arts show schedule announced
Mitchell County Schools is presenting “A Charlie Brown Christmas” in the Kathy Miller Auditorium at Mitchell High School.
Performances are 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 16; 3:30 and 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 17; 5 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 18; and 6 p.m. Monday, Nov. 19.
Tickets are $8 for general admission and $5 for students.
Gingerbread House Contest begins Nov. 19
People can bring their completed gingerbread house into Mitchell County Public Library in Bakersville between 9 a.m.-5 p.m. from Monday, Nov. 19, to Friday, Dec. 7, to participate in the annual Gingerbread House Contest.
There are two divisions – one for 12-and-under and one for adults. Submissions will be on display at the library until Tuesday, Dec. 18, when the winners will be announced.
Gingerbread houses can be picked up after Dec. 18.
Historical Society to recognize end of WWI
The Mitchell County Historical Society Sunday, Nov. 11, will commemorate the 100th anniversary of the armistice that ended World War I.
The bell in the Historic Courthouse will peal 21 times at 11 a.m. the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month. MCHS has alerted the churches in Mitchell County to participate.
The bells honor World War I veterans and all those who have served our country.
At 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 11, MCHS is hosting Jonathan Howard Bennett at the Historic Courthouse in Bakersville to present “Over There & Over Here: World War I in the Mountains.” The program focuses on those who served from Mitchell County and life in the mountains during the Great War.

NC GAL program seeks volunteers
The NC Guardian ad Litem Program is seeking volunteer advocates to represent abused and neglected children in Yancey, Mitchell and Madison counties.
A volunteer training session is 1-4 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 13, at First Baptist Church in Burnsville.
Participants form Mitchell and Madison counties are encouraged to participate as many children still do not have a volunteer assigned to them.
