Monument planned for Bakersville
BAKERSVILLE – Foundation Forward, a nonprofit education organization based in Morganton, is building a Charters of Freedom setting consisting of the Declaration of Independence, the United States Constitution and the Bill of Rights in Bakersville.
The setting will be built on the lawn of the County Administration building and may be accessed by the public 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The location permits easy access for the community to visit the national treasures and for students to study American History. The diktats are just as one would see in Washington, D.C., and is designed and built to last 300-500 years.
These settings are comparable to the actual documents on display in the National Archives. Bronze documents are used instead of parchment, as the setting is the same size as the originals.
Anyone wishing to be a part and make history for this community project may do so. Those who make a significant contribution will have their name placed on a plaque displayed with the setting.
"The County Commissioners have never wavered in their desire to build a Charters of Freedom in beautiful Mitchell County," said Ron Lewis, spokesperson for Foundation Forward.
