MHS senior dies 2 days after accident
LEDGER – A local student has died after sustaining a head injury prior to this past Friday’s high school football game.
Mitchell High School senior Ben Bonner, 17, was riding in the passenger seat of a golf cart at Memorial Stadium when he fainted, fell out of the cart and hit his head on the pavement. He suffered a skull fracture and had brain bleed because of the injury.
Bonner’s parents, Randy and Michelle Bonner, were told their son had congenital heart defects when he was less than 8 months old and needed immediate heart surgery. He has been taking blood pressure medication since that surgery.
Bonner was also diagnosed with Chiari malformation in fourth grade and had to have brain surgery. Chiari malformation is structural defects in the base of the skull and cerebellum, the part of the brain that controls balance.
Bonner had earlier donated blood for Hurricane Harvey relief and moments before the accident was elected to senior homecoming court.
Bonner was the kicker on the Mountaineer football team his freshman year but was told by doctors he could no longer play due to risks.
He was taken to the neuro-ICU at Mission Hospital in Asheville after the accident.
Bonner's funeral is at noon Saturday, Sept. 9, at Mitchell High School.
