Memorial Day ceremony at Mitchell

LEDGER – The Mitchell High School student body Friday, May 24, recognized Memorial Day during its annual ceremony.

The ceremony started with the Presenting of the Colors by Patriots Club Honor Guard Right Rifleman, freshman Jonathan Pressley, American Flag Bearer, senior Justin Bates, NC Flag Bearer, junior Phoebe Laughter and Left Rifleman, junior Jacob Young.

The Star Spangled Banner was sung by Caroline Atkins and a speech concerning the meaning of Memorial Day speech given by Tyler McKinney. 

The song “In Flanders Fields” was performed by Katherine Girtman and the Mitchell Chorus. 

The Memorial Day Trivia Contest winners were Alicia Braithwaite in first place and Koby Buchanan in second place.

Kade Hoilman recited a Memorial Day Poem and the Big and Rich song “The Eighth of November” was performed by Matthew Sanders and Grant Sparks. 

The names of the Mitchell County military dead and their communities were read and the ceremony closed with Taps being performed by Sanders.
