MAKING AN IMPACT
More than 140 employees of The Quartz Corp. in Spruce Pine were not at work Monday, Aug. 6, but did not take the day off during the company’s Volunteer Impact Day.
The entire staff of 140 employees donated 1,120 volunteer hours going to houses and schools in Mitchell County to repair porches and ramps, do exterior landscaping and other projects.
A total of 15 teams met at 7 a.m. at Harris Middle School and from there dispersed to work on 22 projects.
“We have put a lot of time and effort into these projects ad we are excited to see the outcome,” said Scott Reece, human resources manager at Quartz Corp. “It went great. We have our employees working in their strengths doing plumbing, carpentry and other things.”
The Volunteer Impact Day is slated to become an annual event, Reece said, but some projects started this past Monday will have to be finished later.
“We just couldn’t fit it all into one day,” he said. “But we plan to go back and finish it as soon as we can.”
A crew of volunteers also landscaped and trimmed trees at Mitchell House assisting living.
