Enrollment for 4-H Summer Fun program begins in June
4-H Summer Fun is a special program sponsored by Mitchell County 4-H through the NC Cooperative Extension. Activities are open to youth ages 5-18. Workshops are designed for specific age groups and there are limited spaces.
One does not have to be a current 4-H member to participate.
To Enroll in 4-H Summer Fun, complete a registration form, available at the 4-H office, along with a code of conduct, medical release and photo consent. Payment should be made at the time of registration to Mitchell County 4-H. Early Registration for current 4-H members will be 8 a.m.-6 p.m. Thursday, June 7. Early Registration for the public will be open from 8 a.m.-6 p.m. Friday, June 8. Participants will receive a Mitchell County 4-H T-shirt with registration.
We will continue to accept registrations after this date until all workshops are full or until June 15, at which time registration will close. Take advantage of the early registration dates to ensure your child’s space in the workshop of their choice. Spaces are limited to the first 12 registrants. Registration will be accepted at the Mitchell County Cooperative Extension Center, 10 S. Mitchell Ave. in Bakersville. Payment is expected at the time of registration. No registration for Summer Fun will be accepted over the telephone.
All workshops and field trips will meet at the Mitchell County Cooperative Extension Center unless otherwise posted. Light snacks and water will be provided at each workshop.
Participants will need to bring a bag lunch to all events requesting such. All events and field trips will continue rain or shine.
Money Fun for Cloverbuds
Participants will learn the value of money and the value of setting goals and saving for important purchases through fun and a tour of United Community Bank. They will also get to make their own money bag to take home with them. Giving the opportunity to save all year long.

“Its Electric!” Cloverbud Electricity Workshop
Do you ever wonder how electricity works? Well, “Its Electric” is the workshop for you. Get an introduction to Magic of Electricity and learn all about magnetism and circuits. You will get to build your own flashlight and play electric games with your friends.

Do you like science, technology, engineering, or math? How about Robotics? Sumo Bots are a modern twist on the ancient Japanese sport of Sumo Wrestling. Small robots compete in a sumo ring, attempting to push each other off the ring. Participants will build robots with LEGO components, learn to program the robot autonomously, and compete in a sumobot competition. Bring your own lunch.

Five interactive stations will help youth create a painted garden rock, a sun catcher, slime, elephant toothpaste and painted art. Every craft will go home with your child. Experienced 4-H’ers will be helping. You’ll have so much fun.

Take me out to the Ballgame
What is summer without baseball? Join 4-H’ers from across Western NC for 4-H Night at the Asheville Tourists. This is a great family event and we encourage families to attend. 4-H will be prominently featured throughout the night and in the past 4-H’ers have even got to throw the first pitch! Kids 12 and under eat free. All families will meet at McCormick Field, 30 Buchanan Place in Asheville. Transportation may be available upon need.

Cloverbud Farmer for a Day
Welcome to the farm. Join the 4-H summer program for a day filled with agriculture and livestock. We will visit Silver Bunch Family farm and learn how to grow veggies in a raised garden bed. We will also learn how to raise and take care of a farm animal as we visit the pig pen, the rabbit hutch, the chicken coop, and the goat barn. Participants will learn how important agriculture is to Mitchell County and will get to take home their very own seed necklace. Bring a bag lunch, wear closed toe shoes, and wear a hat and sunscreen.

Farmer For a Day
Join the 4-H summer program for a day filled with tours of local farms and agriculture businesses. You will get to experience life on the farm by seeing, touching, and being around plants and animals that are produced in Mitchell County. We will visit farms that have chickens, cows, goats, and other animals. Participants will learn how important agriculture is to Mitchell County and how they can make money with 4-H agriculture projects. Bring a bag lunch, wear closed toe shoes, and wear a hat and sunscreen.

How do you farm or grow plants without using soil? Come explore the production of many of our most common vegetables with hydroponic production methods. Learn what hydroponics is and how farmers are doing it on a large scale and how you can do it on a much smaller scale. You will take home your own hydroponic growing system.

Magic of Electricity Monday
Already know a little bit about electricity but want to learn more? Do you want to learn how to start your own 4-H electric club? Find out why knowing all about the Magic of Electricity is important in our daily lives and test your skills as you learn how to solder with your very own electric kit. Bring a bag lunch.

Junior Craft Day
Have you ever seen a neat craft on Pinterest and wanted to try your hand at making it? Perfectly Pinterest is the day for you! Learn how to make many of the crafts featured on the Pinterest site. Including pool noodle wreaths, marshmallow shooters, a DIY lava lamp, and many more. Be sure to wear your crafting clothes for this event! Bring your own lunch.

Join us for a fun-filled day as we explore one of North Carolina’s natural attractions. There are nature walks, hiking trails, wildlife habitats and the Mile-High Swinging Bridge. Hands on Museum and Gray Fossil Site Field Day
The Gray Fossil Site and Museum is a place where visitors can view and learn about an active Miocene-era fossil dig site. Hands on Museum has moved to the Gray Fossil Site and is now an all-ages Discovery Center dedicated to STEM. We will see many exhibits and learn about science, technology, engineering, and math. All with a hands-on approach. Be sure to dress accordingly and wear closed-toe comfortable shoes. Hat and sunscreen are suggested. Bring a bag lunch.

4-H Kids as Chefs Camp
From farm to table, join us for this week-long journey into learning about local foods, balanced meals, food preservation and culinary skills! Kids as Chefs 4-H Camp is designed for youth 10-and-over who have an interest in cooking (and eating) as well as learning about local foods and healthy choices. Come explore foods that Mitchell County has to offer as we talk to farmers, prepare and enjoy lunch together, and strive to incorporate our “buy local’ philosophy. Participants will make their lunch as part of the experience.

Participants will learn proper dining etiquette, how to write a thank you note, and practice proper introductions. They will also have the opportunity to learn how to tie a tie and bow tie. We will then have lunch at a local restaurant to practice skills learned. Note: Dress nicely.

Lazy 5 Ranch Field Day
Come see all kinds of exotic animals in our own backyard. Join us as we take a wagon ride through 3 ½ mile safari and feed the animals. You will see Zebra, giraffe, ostrich, and many other animals. NASCAR Hall of Fame
Come experience one of the many things that make NC unique. We will start at the NASCAR Hall of Fame and see the history of the sport that calls NC home. We will learn about the science, engineering, and technology that has brought the sport to where it is today. Wear your walking shoes. Bring a bag lunch.

Cloverbud Field Day
Want to learn more about wildlife? Participants will travel to Asheville and visit the Western North Carolina Nature Center— home to more than 60 species of animals including river otters, black bear, red and gray wolves and cougars. Bring a bag lunch, sunscreen, and/or a hat and your walking shoes.

Carowinds Teen Field Day
4-H’ers will get to take a screaming thrill ride on one of the tallest, fastest, and longest roller coasters in the Southeast at Carowinds Amusement park in Charlotte. Carowinds provides both an amusement park and water park all in one great location. For more information about Carowinds, visit www.carowinds.com. Participants will need to be sure to bring plenty of sunscreen, water shoes, towels and a change of clothes. Appropriate clothing will be required for all participants. Meaning a tankini or one-piece bathing suit for girls, and proper fitting swim trunks for boys.
Participants will need money for food and souvenirs. A backpack is recommended.
