Election filing period ends
BAKERSVILLE – The filing period to run for the Mitchell County Board of Education ended at noon Friday, July 27, and no matter the election outcomes, there will be some new faces on the Mitchell County Board of Education.
There are four seats available on the board of education, three seats for regular terms and one to fill the unexpired term of Sherry Bell, who resigned. The seats currently held by board members Kathy Young, Angie Burleson and Gary Moore are up for re-election. Young and Burleson filed for re-election, but Gary Moore did not. In addition to Young and Burleson, Beaver Creek Baptist Church Pastor Brandon Pitman, Chris Pitman, of Webb Funeral Home, and retired music teacher Tim Drum also filed to run, making it five people vying for three seats.
Retired teacher Brenda Sparks and businessman John Wilson filed to seek the seat vacated by Bell’s resignation.
Keith Masters and Steve Wilson filed for the two seats on the Soil and Water Conservation District.
