EDITORIAL: Hard work, dedication validated by recent Chamber award

It is often difficult in the newspaper business to think about winning awards. Most people show up to work each day, do his or her job and go home without ever considering what type of impact that job may have on the community.

When the nominees were announced for the Small Business of the Year award this past Thursday at the Mitchell County Chamber of Commerce annual awards dinner, we were among them, which was an honor. When we were announced as the winner, we felt truly blessed.

We are, in fact, a business. It may not seem that way for many people because we also provide a community service in the form of local news. We own property in downtown Spruce Pine. We have four full-time and two part-time employees and, yes, we strive to generate revenue.

The owners of Community Newspapers Inc., Tom Wood and Dink NeSmith, created and have stood steadfastly by our company’s mission statement that reads, in part, “Our primary goal is to publish distinguished and profitable community-oriented newspapers.” Mr. Wood and Mr. NeSmith knew years ago that a newspaper cannot be one of those without being the other.

The employees of the Mitchell News-Journal, no matter their role, do everything humanly possible to achieve and live up to our company’s mission statement. Being named 2017 Small Business of the Year is a distinction we do not take lightly. It is a reflection of our hard work, dedication and a relentless pursuit of defined goals.

It is likely we earned the award by not only providing a newspaper every week that resonates with readers and advertisers but by also being involved and interested in the business community and its well-being.

We thank the Chamber members who voted for us and we plan to proudly wear the title bestowed upon us.
