Eddleman to speak at MCDP meeting
Dr. Clay Eddleman will be the guest speaker at the Mitchell County Democratic Party’s General Meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 23, in the lower level of the Bakersville Community Health Center, 86 N. Mitchell Ave. in Bakersville.
Eddleman is a retired physician. He completed his undergraduate work, Doctorate of Medicine and Residency in Psychiatry at Emory University in Atlanta. After serving six years in the Medical Corps of the United States Navy, he returned to Atlanta in 1981 and accepted appointments at the Atlanta VA Medical Center and on the faculty of Emory University’s School of Medicine. Both his clinical and administrative professional work centered on developing an understanding of combat-related Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. At the time of his retirement in 2000 he was named Professor Emeritus.
Through his personal campaign of writing many letters to the editor and making numerous local public presentations opposing Amendment One in 2011 and 2012, Eddleman became involved with the Henderson County Democratic Party, including serving as its chair from 2013-2014.
In October at its annual convention, he was elected 11th Congressional District Chair, LGBTQ Democrats of North Carolina, and is charged, along with vice chair Mindy Collins, with establishing chapters of this North Carolina Democratic Party Auxiliary in the counties in District 11 and at major centers of higher education in the district. At the time of their election, there were none. Eddleman and Collins are in the process of helping to establish LGBTQ Democrats of Henderson County and now LGBTQ Democrats of Mitchell County, along with early contacts in Buncombe and Transylvania counties.
Additionally, Eddleman serves on the Budget and Finance Committee of LGBTQ Democrats of North Carolina, is on the Executive Committee of 11th Congressional District Democrats and is an active participant on its County and Precinct Organizing Committee. He is also an SEC Representative from Henderson County, is active with HCDP’s Board of Directors, County Executive Committee, Senior Democrats of Henderson County, Democratic Women of Henderson County and Democratic Discussion Group.
He is an active member of First Congregational Church of Hendersonville.
