Cake 4 Kids delivers birthday cheer to area foster children
A local group has spearheaded an effort to deliver birthday cakes to foster children.
The volunteer group Cake 4 Kids has baked birthday cakes for Mitchell County’s foster children in June and July. The cakes are taken to the Mitchell County Department of Social Services and then delivered to the children.
“I saw online that a group out in California was doing it and I thought it was a great idea,” said Jewell Styles, founder of the local Cake 4 Kids. “All we know going in is how many cakes to bake and the child’s first name.”
The group is in need of volunteers, Styles said.
“We only have six volunteers right now, but we need more,” she said. “We had only five children with birthdays in July and three in June, but we need more volunteers to make sure we’ll be OK if we get slammed with 10 or 15 birthdays in one month.”
Cake 4 Kids volunteers meet at 5:30 p.m. the last Monday of each month at the Spruce Pine Public Library. Call Styles at 828-385-0779 for more information or with questions about the group.
