Anonymous tip leads to marijuana arrest
SPRUCE PINE – An anonymous tip led Mitchell County Sheriff’s deputies to a residence where a man was later arrested for growing marijuana.
Allen Sloan Boyd, 61, of George McKinney Road, Spruce Pine, was arrested Monday, Aug. 19, and charged with manufacturing a schedule VI narcotic and felony possession of a schedule VI narcotic.
Mitchell County Sheriff’s Office Det. Ashley Beam said there were several marijuana plants visible on the back porch of Sloan’s residence. Beam, Mitchell County Sheriff’s Office Capt. Rick Wiseman, Lt. Det. Cecil Hobson, deputies S.E. Davis and Jesse English, and Randy Woods of the North Carolina SBI approached the residence and spoke with Boyd, who said he grows and smokes the marijuana for “personal health reasons and mental problems,” Beam said.
Boyd gave written and verbal permission for the officers to search his property and approximately 40 marijuana plants in various stages of maturity and from multiple growing methods were seized.
“Mr. Boyd went into great detail about his growing operation,” Beam said. “He told us he has never sold marijuana, and all of his plants were for personal use.”
Boyd’s bond was set at $10,000. He was scheduled to appear in court Wednesday, Aug. 28.
