‘I’LL NEVER FORGET THIS’
BAKERSVILLE – For the first time, the Mitchell County Board of Commissioners presented a “Key to the County” to a citizen in recognition of his service to the community.
The board at its regular meeting Monday, Oct. 1, presented Charles “Monroe” Buchanan with the “Key to Mitchell County” and took a few minutes to honor him.
Buchanan served as a Mitchell County Commissioner and a member of the North Carolina House of Representatives. Board Chair Matthew “Vern” Grindstaff said Buchanan was one of his key mentors when learning how to be a public servant.
“He has been a great example to me, especially in what it means to serve every citizen,” Grindstaff said. “Many people on this board could attest to the fact that he brought back numerous resources to Mitchell County.”
Buchanan, who turned 82 this past week, addressed the board and the meeting attendees briefly before exiting with his commemorative plaque displaying his new gold key.
“Thank you ever so much,” Buchanan said. “I’ll never forget this.”
