The Mitchell County Student Showcase is on display until March 17 at the Spruce Pine TRAC gallery, 269 Oak Ave. A reception for the exhibit is 4-6 p.m. Friday, March 9.

The Mountain Piecemakers Quilt Guild is having social hour at 6:30 p.m. and a meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 13, at the Burnsville Town Center. The program is Judy Lane showing free-motion embroidery. Visitors are welcome.

The deadline to apply for representation in either Toe River Arts Burnsville or Spruce Pine gift shop is 5 p.m. Saturday, March 10. Artists must be Mitchell, Yancey or Avery county residents and current Toe River Arts members. Work must meet guidelines available online at or at either gallery. Email with any questions.


The AMY Wee Trade Spring and Summer Children’s Consignment Sale 8 a.m.-6 p.m. Thursday and Friday, March 15-16; and 8 a.m.-noon Saturday, March 17, at the Cross Street Commerce Center in Spruce Pine.


A free genealogy workshop titled “Give Us a Few Minutes and We Will Help You Get Started With Your Family History” is 10 a.m.-noon Saturday, March 17, at the Spruce Pine Visitor Center, 165 Locust St.


The Cross Street Commerce Center is having a St. Patty’s Day Bash from 6-10 p.m. Saturday, March 17. The event is free with a donation at the door. Donations support the Mitchell County Schools food pantry.


Mt. Calvary Freewill Baptist Church is having a “Poor Man’s Supper” of soup beans, corn bread, potatoes, hot dogs and dessert from 4-7 p.m. Saturday, March 17, at the church, 86 Brushy Creek Road (Avery County Airport Road) in Spruce Pine.


The March meeting of SEARCH has been re-scheduled for 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 20, at Trinity Episcopal Church in Spruce Pine.

The deadline to submit proposals for 2019 exhibitions in either the Burnsville or Spruce Pine TRAC galleries is 5 p.m. Saturday, March 24. Participating artists do not have to be Toe River Arts members or live in the region. Information is available online at


“Spring Awakening” with Dr. Jim Henry is at First Baptist Church of Spruce Pine at 6 p.m. Saturday, March 24; and 10:45 a.m. and 6 p.m. Sunday, March 25. All churches are welcome.


The Hope 4 Mitchell County Community Easter Egg Hunt is 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, March 31, at Riverside Park. Lunch will be served at First Baptist Church of Spruce Pine.
