Mayland Community College’s Trick-or-Treat Spooktacular is 5-7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 26, at the college’s Mitchell campus, 200 Mayland Drive in Spruce Pine.

Local author Pat Turner Mitchell will be at the Market on Oak from 1-3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 28, to sign her book “A Mountain to Climb.” Mitchell narrates the story of her parents and their history in the book, a sequel to her first book, “Lifted to the Shoulders of a Mountain.”


Bakersville Fire and Rescue, 306 Baker Lane, is having a “Halloween Block Party” from 5-9 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 31, with a trunk-or-treat, free children’s games and prizes, a giant pumpkin drop at 6 p.m., nonscary haunted hayrides from 5-7 p.m., haunted hayrides from 7-9 p.m. and more.


The Mitchell County Health Partnership meets from noon-1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 7, at Helen’s Restaurant in Bakersville.


The Model Approach to Partnership in Parenting, or MAPP, is having classes from 2-5 p.m. Sundays at the Mitchell County DSS office, 347 Longview Drive in Bakersville.


The Cane Creek Community Club is sponsoring a Veterans Day Breakfast from 8-11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 11, at the Cane Creek Community Center on Stagger Weed Road. All military veterans will be served for free. Cost is $5 for non-veterans.


Gouge Elementary School’s Fall Festival fundraiser is 5-6:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 27, at the school. There will be a haunted house, inflatables, a raffle, a cake walk and more. Hot dogs, chips and drinks will also be available.


Tickets for the Spruce Pine Kiwanis Club Fish Fry from 5-7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 27, at Harris Middle School are on sale for $10 from any Kiwanis member.


The Hinson Girls will host the 5th Sunday Night Gospel Singing at Bear Creek Baptist Church at 6 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 29. The group is made up of four sisters from Lancaster, South Carolina. Everyone is welcome.
