Pop-Up Concert – Spruce Pine Main Street is hosting a Pop-Up Concert featuring Johnny Ellis at 6 p.m. Friday, Aug. 11, at Central Park, 165 Locust St. in Spruce Pine.
Art auction – “On the Fringe 2017: An Extraordinary Gathering” takes place 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Friday, Aug. 11, and Saturday, Aug 12; and 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 13, on the second floor of the TRAC building, 269 Oak. Ave. in Spruce Pine. Artists include Tim Turner (painter), Ken Sedberry (woodfired clay), Bill Brown (sculptor), Pam Brewer (ceramic sculptor), Gary Beecham (glass), Rick Beck (glass) and Val Beck (glass). Free concert – A free beach music concert is 6-8:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 12, at the Bakersville Creek Walk featuring The Beach Nite Band from Virginia. There is plenty of room for shagging and concessions will be available from the Bakersville Masonic Lodge 357. Bring a lawn chair or blanket. The event is sponsored by The Town of Bakersville, Rhododendron Run, NC Rhododendron Festival and the Bakersville Improvement Group.

Reunion – The descendants of James Madison and Ann Bailey Byrd and Jefferson and Emmaline Edwards Bailey are having their annual reunion at 1 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 13, at Lower Brummetts Creek Church of the Brethren near Relief in Mitchell County. Each family is asked to bring a picnic lunch. A decoration will follow at the family cemetery.
Decoration Day – Pleasant Grove Cemetery annual Decoration Day is Sunday, Aug. 13. Please bring your family and a covered dish if you wish to stay for lunch. Pleasant Grove cemetery is located behind the church at the intersection of Double Island and Big Brush Creek Road in Yancey County.
Family Yoga Story Time – The Mitchell County Public Library is hosting Family Yoga Story Time at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 15. Parents and children are invited to this interactive, movement-based event.
RPO meetings – Both committees of the High Country RPO will meet Wednesday, Aug. 16, at the High Country Council of Governments building, 468 New Market Boulevard in Boone. The Rural Transportation Coordinating Committee meets at 10 a.m. and the Rural Transportation Advisory Committee meets at 2 p.m. The meetings are open to the public.

Teen Movie Night – Spruce Pine Main Street is hosting Teen Movie Night from 8-11 p.m. Friday, Aug. 18, at Central Park, 165 Locust St. in Spruce Pine. The movie is Jurassic World, rated PG-13. Movie begins at approximately 8:45 p.m.

Eclipse party – The Mitchell County Public Library, the town of Bakersville and the Bakersville Cub Scouts are sponsoring an “All-American Eclipse Day” party from 1-4 p.m. Monday, Aug. 21, at the creekwalk soccer field in Bakersville. Each family will receive a free pair of eclipse glasses and seating will be available. A telescope with a lens filter will be available to look through as well. Snacks and drinks will be available for purchase.
Historical program –Mitchell County musician and historian Rhonda Gouge headlines a program about the Musicians of the Toe River Valley at 7 p.m. Monday, Aug. 21, at the Historic Courthouse in Bakersville. She will share the stories and music of Steve Ledford, Gus Washburn, Clarence Greene Sr., Clarence Greene Jr., Red Wilson, Doc Hoppes and others.
Blood drive – The American Red Cross is having a blood drive beginning at 12:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 21, at Spruce Pine First Baptist Church, 125 Tappan St.

Car show – The Carolina Pushrodz 11th annual Run for the Hills Car Show begins at 8 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 26, on Marvins Garage Road in Green Mountain. The event is free and features hot rods, muscle and classic cars, rat rods, custom cars and motorcycles.
Summer Concert Series – The Spruce Pine Main Street Music in the Park Summer Concert Series continues from 6-8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 1, at Central Park on Locust Street in downtown Spruce Pine with the Jay Brown Band. Admission is free. Call 828-765-3008 for more information.

Car show – The 2017 Rolling ‘Neath the Roan Car Show, BBQ and Swap Meet begins at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 23, on the grounds of the Buladean Community Foundation Center, formerly the Buladean Elementary School. More than 250 cars, trucks and motorcycles are expected to participate this year. There will be a 50/50 drawing, bake sale and raffle during the event. There will be area arts and crafts vendors as well as specialty items for sale. Live music is 11 a.m.-3 p.m.
