BAKERSVILLE - Russell Franklin Hayes, age 72, of Hamburg Road, the Ledger community, went home to be with his heavenly father on Sunday, Aug. 3, 2014 at Brian Center Health and Rehab in Spruce Pine.

Franklin was a 1960 graduate of Bowman High School where he played basketball all four years. A kind and gentle man, he was preceded in death by his parents, Russell and Virginia Buchanan Hayes and a sister, Carolyn Hayes Spangler.

Franklin worked at Ellen’s Knitting Mill for twenty-nine years before retiring from Dick’s Carpet Service. He was member of the Snow Hill Baptist Church.

Franklin is survived by his wife of thirty-eight years, Judy Beaver Hayes; a daughter, Robin Garrett and husband, Dane of Oklahoma; two step-sons; Tim Beaver and wife, Susie of Spruce Pine and Tony Beaver and wife, Debbie of Burnsville; six grandsons; Tony Beaver and wife, Kayla of Spruce Pine, Adam Beaver of the home; Dalton and Logan Beaver of Spruce Pine; Landon Beaver and wife, Hannah of Kentucky; and Mitchell Garrett of Oklahoma; four granddaughters; Tess and Emma Garrett of Oklahoma; Brandy Gurley and husband, Lance of Spruce Pine and Jasmine Beaver of Burnsville; three great grandchildren; Jaylon, Brylee, and Remi Beaver all of Spruce Pine.

A funeral service honoring the life of Mr. Franklin Hayes was held on Wednesday, Aug. 6, 2014 at 2 p.m. at the Snow Hill Baptist Church with the Rev’s Dean Honeycutt and Dale Buchanan officiating. Interment followed in the Snow Hill Baptist Church Cemetery.

Flowers were accepted and appreciated or donations may be made to Hospice and Palliative Care of the Blue Ridge, 236 Hospital Drive, Spruce Pine, NC 28777.
