REV. MILTON A. HOLLIFIELD, SR.

SWANNANOA/MARION - Rev. Milton A. Hollifield, Sr., age 88, of Swannanoa and formerly of Marion, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, July 14, 2014 at his residence. Born in Mitchell County on April 19, 1926, he was the son of the late George and Annie Baucombe Hollifield. For over 60 years, Rev. Hollifield was a caring and dedicated Free Will Baptist Minister having served in McDowell, Haywood and Buncombe Counties and in Wayne, MI. and was active in the work of several committees and boards of the National Association of the Free Will Baptist. Pastor Hollifield organized and was a promotional representative for the Free Will Baptist Blue Ridge Association in Western North Carolina.

He was a member and care pastor of Rocky Pass Free Will Baptist Church in Marion. He fulfilled his passion for evangelism through his involvement in conducting revivals in numerous states and other countries.

Rev. Hollifield was passionate about visiting hospitals, nursing homes and the homebound. He was a charter member of the board of Directors of the Swannanoa Valley Medical Center. An autobiography was published about his life entitled “Why Me Lord”.

He will be remembered as a loving husband, father, pappaw, brother, and friend to many. Mr. Hollifield is preceded in death by, in addition to his parents, one son, George Frederick “Freddy” Hollifield; one brother, Ervin Hollifield and a son-in-law, Bill Metcalf.

Rev. Hollifield is survived by his loving wife of 69 years, Elizabeth Williams Hollifield of Swannanoa; two daughters, Joyce Metcalf of Swannanoa and Keva Lovik and husband Lloyd, Sr. of Marion; one son, Rev. Milton A. Hollifield, Jr. and wife Gloria of Cary, NC; one brother, Jack Hollifield and wife Nell of Morganton; seven grandchildren; ten great grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren. A number of nieces and nephews also survive.

A funeral service was held Friday, July 18, 2014 at 2 p.m. at Swannanoa First Baptist Church, 503 Park Street, Swannanoa, NC 28778, with Revs. Milton Hollifield, Jr., Steve Lytle and Alan Sailors officiating. The family received friends immediately following the service, from 3 p.m. until 5 p.m., in the Family Life Center at the church. The family held a private burial.

For those that were unable to attend the services, his body lay in state at Westmoreland Funeral Home, Marion, on Thursday, July 17, 2014 from 8 a.m. until 8 p.m.
