SPRUCE PINE - Fred Louis Howell, 86, of the Bandana community, died Monday, July 7, 2014 at Blue Ridge Regional Hospital in Spruce Pine. He was born on February 15, 1928 in Mitchell County and was the son of the late Paul and Dolly Sparks Howell. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter and son-in-law, Janice Howell Robinson and husband, Bill. Fred was a member of the U.S. Army and was stationed in Japan. He was employed at Henredon Furniture for 7 years and as a salesman for the Coca Cola Bottling Co. for over 35 years. He enjoyed reading, especially his Bible, telling jokes and meeting new people. Fred was a deacon and member of the Silver Chapel Baptist Church for many years.

Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Solena Mozell Robinson Howell of the home; a daughter, Nicki Hyatt and husband, Gary of Bakersville; grandsons, Nathan Stewart and wife, Lacey of Little Switzerland, Casey Robinson of Morganton, and Neal Grindstaff and wife, Jennifer of Spruce Pine; and great-grandsons, Jacob Stewart and Grayson Grindstaff.

Graveside services honoring the life of Fred L. Howell were held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, July 9, in Silver Chapel Baptist Church Cemetery with the Revs. Jonathon Thacker and Jay Orr officiating. Webb Funeral Home in Spruce Pine assisted the family.
