SPRUCE PINE - Arthur Scott, 98, passed away Saturday, May 31, 2014. Formerly of Birmingham, England; South Weymouth, Pembroke, and Carver, Mass.; and South Hadley and Fairhaven, Mass., he had lived in Mitchell County for two years. He was preceded in death by a son, Christopher Scott; a daughter, Barbara Anne Roche; and two infant great-granddaughters, Maisie and Ava.

Survivors include his daughters, Mary Jean Hooper of Bakersville, and Kathryn Lee (William) Kahill of Kingston, Mass., 10 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild; sons-in-law, Ronald P. Roche of Fairhaven, and Robert Gurwitch, Plymouth, Mass.; and his special helper and friend, Ella Mae Silvers of Bakersville. He also had many loving relations in England. Mr. Scott served in the British Army in WWII, and recently received his Normandy Commemorative Medal. He also received three King George Medals and various other battle awards. After immigrating to the United States in 1946, he joined the Masonic Order and died as a 59 year Member of Weymouth United Lodge AF&AM in Abington, Mass., and a member of The Order of the Eastern Star Pilgrim Chapter, East Bridgewater, Mass. He was Royal Order Mason, a Knights Templar, and a Past Patron of Wessagusset Chapter OES, Weymouth, Mass. He was trained as a shoemaker and worked for the Town of Carver, Mass. for many years as part of the Building and Grounds Dept. prior to his retirement.

Interment will be beside his wife at Evergreen Cemetery, South Hadley, Mass., at a later date. Services will be held at that time. Henline-Hughes Funeral Home assisted the family.
