Five Mitchell High senior basketball players will represent their school in the eighth annual West Midwest 1A All-Star basketball games on March 19 in Highlands.

Tim Hollifield and Ethan Willis will represent the varsity boys’ team while Chandra Jenkins, Chloe Carter and Savannah Banks will represent the girls.

The boys’ team went 12-9 overall and 9-3 in conference play. The girls went 13-11 overall and 6-6 in the conference.

The game and banquet were originally scheduled to be held at Cherokee High but the site was changed due to COVID restrictions. The girls’ all-star game tips off at 5 p.m. and the boys play at 6:30 p.m.

During the games, eight players (four girls and four boys) will receive scholarships. There will also be an all-star banquet during which players and all-star coaches will be honored.

North Carolina High School Athletic Association Commissioner Que Tucker will speak during the event.

There’s no charge for the banquet for those participating in the games. Parents, friends and others can enjoy the banquet for $7. All proceeds go toward scholarships.

Admission to the games is also $7. Practices begin at 11 a.m. and the banquet begins at 2 p.m. The address for the host site (Highlands High) is 600 N. Fourth St., Highlands (28741).
