SPRUCE PINE - Barbara Sue Hughes, of Spruce Pine, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, June 16th, 2014 at the Johnson City Medical Center. A native of Avery County, she was a daughter of the late Daddy Joe and Mama Willie Hughes. She was also preceded in death by an infant sister, Lucille Hughes; sister, Shirley Robinson; and brother, Kenneth Raymond Hughes. Barbara Sue was a member of Whites Memorial Baptist Church whose life was loving her grandchildren.

Surviving is a daughter, Julie McCurry of Spruce Pine; a son, Rick Penrod and wife, Tammy of Lily Branch; four grandchildren, Cody Buchanan, Skylor McCurry, Joseph Richard Penrod and Savannah Marie Riggs; one great-grandchild, Isaiah Buchanan; two sisters, Louella Singleton and husband, Eddie, and Lila Vance and husband, Butch, all of Stamey Branch; three brothers, Maynard Hughes and wife, Reneth, and Sanford Hughes and wife, Jackie, all of Spruce Pine, and Stan Hughes and wife, Amy of Virginia. A host of nieces and nephews also survive.

A memorial service was held at 7 p.m. on Thursday, June 19 at Whites Memorial Baptist Church. Rev. David Troutman officiated. The family received friends from 6 p.m. until the service hour on Thursday at the church. Memorial donations may be made to Shriner’s Hospital at 604 Doug Mayes Place, Charlotte, NC 28262. Yancey Funeral Services assisted the family.
