Zheng, Suddreth win first ‘History Bee’
The Mitchell County Historical Society’s first History Bee took place this past Thursday at the Historic Courthouse in Bakersville.
The goal of the History Bee, and the mission of Historical Society, is helping Mitchell County residents, especially young people, become more aware of the area’s rich heritage.
There were two divisions of competition: one for Mitchell County students under 15 and one for students 15-18. The $500 first-place prize in the under-15 division went to Allison Suddreth, 14, a freshman at Mitchell High School. First prize in the 15-18 division was awarded to MHS junior Anna Zheng.
Tyler Burleson, 13, of Harris Middle School, and Chesnee Snell, 13, of Harris Middle School, rounded out the prize winners in the under-15 division – who won $300 and $200, respectively.
Amanda Biddix, 16, and Ada McKinney, 16, both of MHS, won second and third prize in the 15-18 division, respectively.
Local businesses and organizations provided the prize money.
All questions in the History Bee came from Elizabeth Hunter’s “Voices of the Valley,” which was published in 2011, the 150th anniversary of the formation of Mitchell County.
Judges for the competition were Rhonda Gunter, Matthew Hurd and Sue Ledford. Dr. Daniel Barron was master of ceremonies.
