Three Mitchell High seniors recently taught a first-class health education lesson to Carrie Duncan’s second-grade reading group at Greenlee Elementary School as part of a project for the Future Healthcare Professionals Student Organization.

Alondra Ramirez, Elizabeth Badillo and Selena Queriapa prepared a kid-friendly fun presentation to introduce their lesson on dental hygiene.

For the next part of the lesson, the HOSA members played an interactive game that allowed second-grade students to get up and move around the room as they answered trivia questions.

For hands-on learning, the HOSA members then assisted the students as they participated in creative activities where they learned to floss by using ice cube trays and clay as well as brush their teeth with simulated mouths.

The lesson ended with a coloring activity and a recap of new skills learned during the dental hygiene lesson. Each second-grader was provided with a goody bag of oral hygiene supplies provided by the ECU Dental School.

Ramirez, Badillo and Queriapa will present the portfolio of their educational experience at a competitive event in April at the 2023 NC State HOSA competition in Greensboro.

Mitchell High School CTE and HOSA thanked Duncan and her students for welcoming the HOSA students and the ECU Dental School for its donation.
