A recent joint investigation by the Mitchell County Sheriff’s Office, Spruce Pine Police Department and North Carolina Probation and Parole led to multiple charges for three locals and the recovery of drugs, weapons, cash and paraphernalia from a Spruce Pine residence.

The trio of departments conducted a warrantless search of the home of Taylor Liles of Spruce Pine as part of the conditions of his supervised probation. During the search, officers located several items that led to a deeper investigation.

Officers recovered from the residence marijuana, marijuana resin, psilocybin mushrooms, methamphetamine, other schedule II and IV controlled substances, a Glock handgun, a Ruger rifle, more than $7,000 in cash and several paraphernalia items consistent with the sale and delivery of controlled substances.

Liles was charged with possession of methamphetamine, felony simple possession of schedule II controlled substances, felony simple possession of schedule IV controlled substances, possession with intent to sell, manufacture or deliver methamphetamine and schedule II controlled substances, possession of a firearm by a felon and possession of drug paraphernalia. The investigation also led to charges for Shannon Buchanan and Aubrey Crain.

Buchanan was charged with simple possession of schedule IV controlled substances and Crain was charged with felony possession of schedule VI controlled substances, felony possession of schedule I controlled substances, possession with intent to sell, manufacture or deliver schedule VI and I controlled substances and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. The investigation is ongoing, so more charges could result.

“The activities occurring at this residence were creating an unsafe environment for the children who live there and our community as a whole,” said Kasey Cook, police chief. “It’s our duty to keep Spruce Pine a safe place to live.”
