Toe River Arts on Thursday, June 9 hosted its first community conversation in the Spruce Pine Owen Gallery.

The relaxed, drop-in mixer allowed visitors to learn more about the work of the Mitchell County Department of Social Services while also appreciating some local art.

Toe River Arts Executive Director Nealy Andrews said she learned plenty.

“I was excited to hear about the direction of Mitchell County Department of Social Services and to learn more about the services they offer,” she said.

DSS Director Wendy Boone and Program Manager for Community Services Shawn Block were both on hand to share their experiences and opportunities for community members to get involved.

While the pair shared, guests also enjoyed the exhibit “A Time and Place” which features the work of Luther and Victoria Stroup and four generations of handcrafted woodworks inspired by the Appalachian region.

The Community Conversations series will continue, highlighting various local resources.

Andrews said she’s eager to see what’s next.

“We hope Community Conversations will be opportunities for us to learn more about the varied resources and organizations who support our community and all the people with whom we share it,” Andrews said.
