Local 4-H Shooting Sports Club headed to state tourney after strong regional showing

The Mountaineers 4-H Shooting Sports Club is headed to the highest level of competition in the state after a strong showing at the 2022 West Region 4-H Shooting Sports Tournament earlier this month at Polk County Gun Club in Columbus.

In the regional tournament, counties from across Western North Carolina competed in shotgun, rifle, archery and pistol. Mitchell County’s strong showing punches its ticket to the State 4-H Tournament in October.

Troy Gouge, Deren Hise and Isaac Gouge advanced to the state tournament in the Senior Shotgun Division. Troy Gouge, Tristan Justice and Bransen Pittman advanced in the Senior Rifle Open Sights Division.

Dawson Silvers advanced in Senior Rifle Telescopic and Senior Archery Compound. Alex Buchanan also punched her ticket in Senior Archery Compound by finishing second at the regional tournament.

In the Senior Small Bore Pistol Team Division, Deren Hise, Thomas Hise, Connor Miller and Pittman earned a second-place finish to punch their ticket to the state tournament.

Daniel McClure and Addyson Roberts advanced in the Junior Shotgun Division. McClure, Aieden Sellers, Emma Sellers, Ezra McClure and Keegan Robinson took second and are on to states in the Junior Rifle Open Sights Team Division.

Addyson Roberts and Riley Silver advanced in Junior Rifle Telescopic. Silver finished second at regionals in Junior Rifle Telescopic.

In the Junior Archery Compound Team Division, Emery Brown, Riley Silver and Ciara Silvers helped the team finish second and advance to states. Roberts is also headed to states in Junior Archery Compound.
