Construction on the county’s new school in Ledger is moving at a fast pace, Mitchell Schools Superintendent Chad Calhoun said in a recent update about the project.

The school, which is made possible through $40 million in needs-based capital grant funding from the state, will have two sides— an elementary wing for grades 3-5 and a middle school wing for grades 6-8.

The school will be across from the Mitchell County Schools Central Office in Ledger, down the road from Mitchell High and the Mitchell County Senior Center.

The project began with preliminary conversations about eight years ago. Over the course of the past few years, the location, scope and details of the project have shifted several times.

Ground broke on the site this past March and site preparation is expected to be finished within the next couple of weeks.

The concrete foundation is finished. Stormwater, sewer, water and septic were being installed when Calhoun offered his update this past week.

Parking lots and roads were recently packed with stone and the first wall went up earlier this week. Large cranes and other pieces of equipment descended on Ledger this past weekend.

Crews expect to erect about 12 walls a day, weather permitting.

“The building will go up quickly and should be completely under roof by December,” Calhoun said.

All phases of the project are either on or ahead of schedule.

“We are excited to see the building begin to rise,” Calhoun said.
